Product Care Group, a privately-owned business based in Wigan, has experienced exceptional growth since its founding 15 years ago. Initially established by three founders to source and supply electrical goods to the UK market, the company grew from zero to £50 million in turnover during its first decade. Over the past five years, Product Care Group has doubled that figure, and today, with over 265 employees, it is a leading player in both logistics and brand licensing.
John Cohring, the CEO of Product Care Group, joined the business in 2020 with a clear mission. "When I joined, we were a £50 million business, and we thought there was a real opportunity to make it bigger," Cohring explains. "Since then, we’ve transformed the business, and this year we’re on track to hit £110 million." The company now operates internationally, with markets in Australasia and Europe, in addition to its dominant presence in the UK.
As the company grew, so did its legal complexities. Product Care Group handles numerous contractual agreements with brand partners, manufacturers, and retailers. This includes licensing well-known brands such as Russell Hobbs for microwaves and large appliances, and George Foreman for barbecues, alongside partnerships with other major brands like LG, Beko, and Shark Ninja. Managing these relationships requires careful attention to the intricate legal frameworks involved.
Cohring added: "We’ve built strong relationships with some of the biggest brands in the world. From LG to Shark Ninja, each of these partnerships requires a lot of careful legal work to make sure everything runs smoothly."
To navigate these legal challenges, Product Care Group sought a partner who could match their ambition and help them manage the complex web of contracts that underpin their business. They initially connected with CG through CG’s Client Relationship Director Andrew Dunne. Cohring said: "From the start, it was clear CG were the right fit. We needed someone who could keep up with the complexity of our business, and they’ve been fantastic from day one."
One of the most transformative moments in Product Care Group’s recent history was securing a partnership with Shark Ninja, one of the largest electrical brands in the world. This deal could once again double the company’s turnover, and Cohring credits CG for making it happen.
"When Shark Ninja approached us to be their UK distribution partner, there were a lot of legal hoops to jump through," Cohring explains. "CG were right there with us, guiding us through every step. Without them, we wouldn’t have secured that deal - it’s as simple as that."
Cohring is quick to point out the value CG brings beyond handling contracts. "They’re not just there for the paperwork. They’ve been instrumental in helping us with HR issues, providing competition law training, and just being on-hand whenever we need them," he says. CG’s flexible approach allows them to manage Product Care Group’s legal needs, whether during intense periods of new opportunities or in quieter times when contracts need maintenance.
For Cohring, one of the most important aspects of the partnership is how seamlessly CG has integrated into the team. "They’re not just some law firm we call up now and then," he says. "Tom and Surayya, our main contacts at CG, are basically part of our team. When we need something sorted, I give Tom a call, and it’s done. They know how we work, they know what we need, and they make it happen."
Beyond their legal expertise, CG has also introduced Product Care Group to new business connections. "They network really well," Cohring says. "They’re always putting their clients in touch with other companies that could be potential partners, and that’s something you don’t usually get from a law firm."
Cohring speaks passionately about the partnership with CG, reflecting on how crucial they’ve been to Product Care Group’s success. "CG’s flexibility, their ability to get into the details of our contracts, and the trust we have in them - it’s made all the difference," he says. "They’ve helped us move forward and grow, and without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
“CG’s ethos and culture mirrors our own in many ways - we're based on people, trust and partnerships and CG embody that for us, it's just in their DNA.”
Looking to the future, Cohring is confident that Product Care Group will continue its upward trajectory, and he knows that CG will be alongside them for the journey. "We’re aiming to double the business again in the next three to five years," Cohring says. "And with CG supporting us, I have no doubt we’ll get there. They’ve been absolutely brilliant."
